Can I use Invisalign with other treatments?

Patients that have existing dental work that can include veneers or crowns can often wonder if Invisalign is a possible tooth straightening option for them. Our North Vancouver dentists discuss how adults with other treatments may still be able to alter their teeth with Invisalign.

If you have crooked teeth, mild crowding, complex bite problems, sleep apnea, or another orthodontic issue, your dentist may recommend Invisalign as a treatment option to help straighten your teeth and improve your bite.

Many adults are deciding to straighten their teeth later in life and so are more likely to have advanced dental work including crowns, implants and veneers.

Fortunately, Invisalign still may be an option for you if you've already had one of these additional treatments.

What Impact Do Missing Teeth Have On My Smile?

Even though tooth loss is relatively common, it has serious consequences for your oral health. Missing teeth, in addition to leaving a gap in your mouth, can cause your bite and remaining teeth to become misaligned. Bone thinning is another possibility.

The severity of wrinkles may gradually increase. Fortunately, you might still be a candidate for Invisalign even if you've had procedures like dental crowns or others to replace missing teeth.

Invisalign If You Have Crowns

If you have dental crowns or bridges and want to get Invisalign, you and your dentist may have some difficulties. Candidates for Invisalign must have strong roots and crowns that are securely attached to their teeth.

You won't have to wear brackets on your teeth if you use Invisalign, which can help prevent a crown from coming loose or detaching. To protect the crown of your tooth, your dentist may also recommend a clear attachment.

Invisalign If You Have Veneers

Do you want to change the size, shape, or colour of a tooth? Porcelain veneers could be an option for you. These individually fitted cosmetic dental restorations make your teeth appear more symmetrical.

If you also have issues with your teeth's alignment, your dentist may recommend Invisalign to straighten your teeth and address any bite or misalignment issues that may arise after you've had dental veneers.

If your veneers are securely bonded and have kept your teeth strong and healthy, Invisalign may be an option. Attachments may be recommended by the dentist to make the veneers fit more snugly. Consult your dentist to see if this is a problem, as veneers can restrict tooth and bite movement.

Invisalign If You Have Dental Implants

Based on the results of your dentist's examination, dental implants may be required as part of your treatment plan. Some patients' jawbones, however, require additional support or are deteriorating before implants can be placed.

If necessary, the Invisalign and dental implant treatments could be coordinated. Your dental team will need to determine the best order for you based on your needs. Keep in mind that a dental implant should last a lifetime.

The dentist can create a treatment plan for you that addresses your needs, including the remaining teeth around the dental implant, to help you achieve a straighter smile.

Because each case is unique, you should discuss your best options for correcting your orthodontic and other issues with your dentist.
